Religious Education (R.E)

              Buswells Lodge Religious Education Statement

        Intent, Implementation and Impact

Intent

At Buswells Lodge Primary School, RE enables our children to explore challenging questions about meaning and purpose in life, beliefs about God, ultimate reality, issues of right and wrong and what it means to be human.

Pupils learn about religions and worldviews in local, national and global contexts, to discover, explore and consider different answers to these questions. They learn to weigh up the value of wisdom from different sources, to develop and express their insights in response, and to agree or disagree respectfully.

Teaching will equip pupils with systematic knowledge and understanding of a range of religions and worldviews, enabling them to develop their ideas, values and identities.

The RE curriculum at Buswells Lodge aims to ensure that all pupils:

· Expand their spiritual, moral, social, cultural, mental and physical development;

· Are prepared for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of later life.

Our RE curriculum is designed to motivate children, through engaging activities, trips and visitors that give all students an opportunity to engage in systematic enquiry into challenging questions raised by religion and worldviews, so that they can develop the understanding and skills needed to appreciate and appraise varied responses to these questions, as well as develop responses of their own .

RE is taught as three separate RE weeks within the school year. This provides the opportunity for deeper exploration.

Implementation

At Buswells Lodge Primary School the following religions have been selected for study which are presented in the Leicester City Agreed Syllabus:

  • Christianity
  • Islam
  • Hinduism
  • Sikhism

From the syllabus it is required that:-

In the Early Years Foundation Stage the learning outcomes are referenced to Christianity and as appropriate to a range of other beliefs and cultures. In KS1, Christianity and Islam are studied in depth. Throughout KS2, all the religions above are covered in depth.

We value the religious background of all members of the school community and hope that this will encourage individuals to share their own experiences with others.  All religions and their communities are treated with respect and sensitivity and we value the links which have been established between home, school, and our faith communities.

We acknowledge that each religion studied can contribute to the education of all our pupils.  We promote teaching in Religious Education that places value in open enquiry and first-hand experiences wherever possible for both staff and children.

Impact

Our RE curriculum at Buswells Lodge impacts the children in many ways.

By:

  • Extending their knowledge and understanding of religions and beliefs
  • Developing a religious vocabulary and interpret religious symbolism in a variety of forms
  • Reflecting on questions of meaning, offering their own thoughtful and informed insights into religious and secular world-views
  • Exploring ultimate questions of beliefs and values in relation to a range of contemporary issues in an ever-changing society.

Through their R.E. learning, the children at Buswells Lodge Primary School will be able to make links between their own lives and those of others in their community and in the wider world, developing an understanding of other people’s cultures, religious beliefs and ways of life.

At Buswells Lodge Primary School our children go out into the world with the knowledge and skills to understand the beliefs of others and live respectfully in today’s diverse and ever changing world.
