Teaching of reading
At our school we teach children the content of the National Curriculum for reading. The programme of study for each year group is separated into two strands:
Word reading and reading (and listening) comprehension.
In Foundation Stage and KS1, the phonics element of the word reading strand is taught following Little Wandle Letters & Sounds phonics.
In all year groups, there are number of processes, skills and expectations which all children should develop, working with books at their independent level for reading through guided and independent reading lessons.
Through shared reading, good quality, challenging books, which are read aloud and modelled by the teacher, are used to teach the expected reading skills.
